The 12th edition of the Effat International Student Film Festival took place in Jeddah in April 2025, offering another inspiring platform for emerging Saudi filmmakers to showcase their work, connect with industry professionals, and gain valuable exposure. Organised by Effat University, the festival is one of the longest-running student-led film festivals in the Kingdom and continues to play a major role in developing young talent in the Saudi film scene.

The festival drew remarkable international attention, receiving over 2,200 film submissions from 90 countries, along with entries from 10 Saudi universities. This wide participation reflected the festival’s growing global reach and its importance as a platform for student filmmakers. The strong presence of local universities also highlighted the rising interest in filmmaking across the Kingdom and the festival’s role in nurturing and showcasing emerging Saudi talent alongside international peers.

This year’s festival, held under the theme “From Dream to Film,” was a celebration of creativity and transformation, highlighting how stories and ideas can evolve into powerful cinematic works. The programme featured screenings, workshops, and masterclasses aimed at helping young filmmakers take their first steps into the industry. It also recognised several distinguished figures in the film world, including Saudi director Abdullah Al-Muheisen, actor Hassan Assiri, director Khalid Al-Harbi, British animation director Joanna Quinn, and Professor Ghada Gabara, president of the Egyptian Academy of Arts. Their presence added depth and inspiration to the event, reinforcing its reputation as a serious platform for learning and industry dialogue.

Among the festival’s key international highlights was the participation of Joanna Quinn, a British animator and director known for her award-winning films. Her visit was made possible through the support of the British Council, which continues to champion cultural exchange and artistic collaboration between the UK and Saudi Arabia.

Joanna Quinn led a masterclass in animation, where she shared her creative process, from early character development to final animation production. The session offered students a hands-on insight into the world of animation and was filled with lively interaction, questions, and inspiration. Her expertise and warmth left a strong impression on attendees.

In addition to the masterclass, Joanna took part in panel discussions focusing on animation, visual storytelling, and the role of women in film. Her presence offered a fresh perspective and gave students valuable insight into working in the global film industry.

Beyond the official sessions, Joanna made time to watch student films, meet with young filmmakers, and offer individual feedback. Her approachable nature and genuine interest in student work made her one of the most memorable figures of the festival.

As the Effat Film Festival continues to grow year after year, it remains a vital space for young Saudi storytellers to share their voices. The 12th edition, guided by the theme “From Dream to Film,” was a powerful reminder of how imagination, mentorship, and opportunity can come together to shape the future of Saudi cinema.
