Saudi Arabia has announced the creation of the Riyadh University of Arts (RUA), a new institution dedicated to arts and cultural education that is expected to foster international collaboration, including partnerships with leading institutions from the United Kingdom.
The announcement was made by Saudi Minister of Culture Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan during the Cultural Investment Conference in Riyadh. The new university forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broader effort to strengthen its cultural ecosystem and develop the next generation of creative talent.
For the United Kingdom, the development of cultural education in Saudi Arabia presents meaningful opportunities for collaboration. British universities, cultural organisations and creative institutions are widely recognised for their expertise in arts education, research and creative industries, making them natural partners in supporting the growth of new cultural institutions.
Through international partnerships, the Riyadh University of Arts aims to build academic programmes that combine local cultural knowledge with global perspectives. Collaboration in curriculum development, research and professional training will help create an educational environment that encourages innovation, creativity and cross-cultural exchange.
The university is part of Saudi Arabia’s wider cultural transformation under Vision 2030, which places culture and creativity at the centre of economic diversification and social development. As the Kingdom expands its cultural infrastructure, education will play a vital role in building a sustainable pipeline of artists, cultural professionals and creative entrepreneurs.
Located in Irqah, Riyadh, the university will begin with three initial colleges: Music, Film, and Theatre and Performing Arts. These programmes will offer students specialised training for careers across the performing and creative arts.
In the coming years, the university plans to expand its academic offering to include additional disciplines such as architecture and design, culinary arts, visual arts, heritage studies, literature, fashion and cultural management. Together, these fields reflect the broad scope of the creative economy and the growing demand for cultural expertise.
RUA will offer a wide range of qualifications, including short courses, diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as doctoral programmes. Scholarships will also be introduced to support talented students pursuing careers in arts and culture.
International collaboration will remain a key part of the university’s development. By working with global partners, RUA aims to strengthen research, encourage knowledge exchange and support the professional development of artists, educators and cultural leaders.
As Saudi Arabia continues to invest in culture as a driver of growth and innovation, initiatives such as the Riyadh University of Arts highlight the growing importance of cultural education. For UK organisations working in the arts and creative industries, the university represents a valuable platform for collaboration, dialogue and shared learning between the two countries.
