A new fellowship programme is opening pathways for cultural research, archival engagement and academic exchange between Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.

Launched in March 2026, the Saudi UK Cultural Research Fellowships bring together the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Effat University and The National Archives of the United Kingdom. The initiative forms part of a wider framework of cultural cooperation, with a shared focus on heritage preservation, archival research and knowledge exchange.

In its first cycle for 2026 to 2027, the programme will support six year long fellowships, including four in Saudi Arabia and two in the United Kingdom. The selected cohort will bring together scholars and cultural researchers whose work engages with the history and heritage of the Arabian Peninsula, contributing to a growing body of research that connects institutions and perspectives across both countries.

The fellowship is open to academics and cultural heritage professionals based in Saudi Arabia and the UK who are able to conduct independent research in English. Proposed projects are expected to engage with archival materials from The National Archives, alongside other relevant collections in both countries, while offering clear cultural and societal value.

A key component of the programme is a 10 week residency at The National Archives in London, scheduled between 24 August and 30 October 2026. During this period, fellows will work closely with archival collections, receive practical training and connect with researchers and cultural institutions across the UK.

The programme will conclude with a closing event at Effat University in Jeddah in August 2027, where fellows will present their research outcomes to scholars and invited guests.

As the official archive of the UK Government, The National Archives holds more than 1,000 years of historical records, offering a strong foundation for archival research and international collaboration. Through this initiative, the partners aim to deepen cultural connections, expand research opportunities and support a new generation of scholarship linking Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.

Applications are now open, with a deadline of 11 May 2026 at 11:59 pm GMT. Fellowship recipients will be announced on 4 June 2026, with the programme beginning on 1 August 2026.
